On January 1, 2026, Bosch's Suzhou factory completed a new round of SMT production line upgrades, and its two newly launched dedicated placement lines for automotive control boards officially adopted a high-reliability SMT Solder process solution. This solution uses a SAC405 alloy system with a silver content of over 4.0%, and stably controls the solder joint void rate within 3.2% through reflow profile dynamic compensation technology. This move marks a substantial breakthrough in the engineering adaptability of SMT solder under automotive-grade high-vibration and wide-temperature-range operating conditions. Leading domestic EMS manufacturers such as Universal Scientific Industrial (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and Guanghong Technology also launched similar production line verification processes during the same period.
According to statistics from the China Electronic Materials Industry Association for the fourth quarter of 2025, the procurement volume of automotive SMT solder increased by 27.6% year-on-year, of which high-temperature lead-free solder accounted for 61.3%, an increase of nearly 12 percentage points compared to the same period in 2024. This growth is not driven by orders from a single automaker, but by the supply chain localization strategy jointly promoted by new energy vehicle manufacturers such as BYD, NIO, and XPeng, together with local Tier 1 suppliers such as Desay SV and Jingwei Hirain. Multiple Solder Manufacturers reported that the delivery cycle of their automotive-grade SMT solder orders has been extended from the conventional 6 weeks to 9-11 weeks, and the pressure on capacity allocation continues to emerge.
On-site industry observations show that the current penetration of SMT solder in the automotive electronics field presents obvious stratification characteristics. Traditional instrument clusters and air conditioning control modules still use SAC305 as the mainstream choice, while domain controllers, lidar signal processing boards, and 800V high-voltage OBC main control boards involving functional safety level ASIL-B and above generally require solder to meet the Class 3 purity index in the J-STD-006C standard and the solder joint integrity retention rate ≥98.5% after 1500 temperature cycles specified in the AEC-Q200-003 clause. This has directly driven Domestic Solder enterprises such as Ningbo Kangqiang Electronics and Shenzhen Vatech to accelerate the construction of batch preparation capabilities for high-purity tin-silver-copper master alloys, and cooperate with the Institute of Microelectronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to carry out research on the thermal fatigue evolution model of solder microstructure.
It is worth noting that some international solder giants have not simultaneously increased their investment in automotive-grade production lines. Kester and Alpha Assembly Solutions clearly stated in their 2025 financial reports that their automotive electronics business focus is still concentrated on traditional wave soldering and selective soldering scenarios, and R&D investment related to SMT solder only accounts for 8.7% of the annual total. In contrast, domestic enterprises such as Shanghai Kaixinsen built the first fully enclosed automotive-grade SMT solder pilot line in December 2025. All equipment adopts German Fritsch planetary grinding and Japanese Shimadzu ICP-MS online impurity detection systems, and its submitted samples have passed the -40℃ to 150℃ dual-cycle aging test at the German headquarters laboratory of Continental, with the verification cycle compressed to 22 days, 35% shorter than the industry average.
The industry consensus is that the application expansion of SMT solder in the automotive electronics field is not a simple replacement of the original process, but a systematic adaptation process formed along with the increase in the number of PCB layers, the miniaturization of pad sizes, and the rise in thermal management complexity. Current technical bottlenecks are concentrated on solder collapse control under fine-pitch QFN packaging, interface IMC growth inhibition in multi-layer stacked structures, and electrochemical migration risk control between high-copper substrates and high-silver solders. These practical challenges are forcing links such as material formulation, stencil design, and reflow oven temperature zone coordination to form a cross-professional joint optimization mechanism, rather than relying solely on the improvement of single-point solder performance.
