Solder Bar Raw Material Verification Process

Solder Bar Raw Material Verification Process

Every incoming batch of Solder Bar must undergo a structured Raw Material Verification process before release to production, because unverified material introduces immediate risk of voiding, cold joints, or intermetallic compound instability during reflow. Visual inspection begins with surface evaluation for oxidation discoloration, slag inclusion, or mechanical deformation, while dimensional checks confirm cross-sectional uniformity within ±0.2 mm tolerance across three points per bar, since inconsistent geometry disrupts automated feeding in wave soldering equipment and causes Flux starvation in selective soldering nozzles.

Density measurement is performed using the Archimedes principle with distilled water at 25°C, and results must fall within ±0.5% of the theoretical density calculated from nominal alloy composition, because deviations exceeding this threshold indicate either gas porosity from improper casting or unintended elemental dilution from contaminated melt crucibles. Melting point verification employs differential scanning calorimetry under nitrogen purge, with peak onset temperature required to match certified reference values within ±1.5°C, as even minor shifts in eutectic behavior alter solidification kinetics and promote dendritic growth at grain boundaries.

Spectrographic analysis via optical emission spectrometry covers all major alloying elements, tin, lead, silver, copper, antimony, and bismuth, as well as controlled impurities like iron, zinc, aluminum, and arsenic, because trace contamination above 10 ppm for iron or 5 ppm for zinc accelerates solder pot dross formation and degrades solderability on OSP-coated PCBs. Supplier certificates of conformance are cross-checked against actual test reports, and any mismatch between declared lot number, heat treatment history, or casting date triggers immediate quarantine, since batch traceability is non-negotiable when root-causing field failures linked to solder embrittlement or thermal fatigue.

Each Solder Bar sample is cut using carbide-tipped saws with coolant flow to prevent localized heating that could skew microstructural assessment, and cross-sections are mounted, polished, and etched with 2% hydrochloric acid in ethanol to reveal grain morphology and phase distribution, because visible segregation or coarse primary intermetallics indicate inadequate homogenization during ingot annealing. Tensile testing is omitted for routine verification but applied selectively when yield strength anomalies are suspected, with minimum elongation at break required to exceed 25% for Sn63Pb37 and 35% for SAC305, since reduced ductility correlates strongly with increased fracture probability under board flexure or thermal cycling stress.

Raw Material Verification documentation must include operator ID, instrument calibration status, ambient lab temperature and humidity readings, and raw spectral output files archived for minimum seven years, because audit readiness is mandatory under IATF 16949 and IPC-7711/7721 revision control requirements. Any deviation from specification, whether in density, melting range, elemental concentration, or surface finish, requires formal non-conformance reporting and joint review with supplier quality engineering within 24 hours, because delayed containment allows defective bars to enter Solder Paste manufacturing or bar-fed selective soldering lines where removal becomes exponentially more costly.
