Key Points for Eutectic Solder Selection: Melting Point and Ductility Are the Core

Key Points for Eutectic Solder Selection: Melting Point and Ductility Are the Core

The melting point of Eutectic Solder cannot be determined by simply looking up a table; it must be dynamically matched with three factors: the actual heating capability of the existing reflow oven on the production line, the TG value of the PCB board material, and the temperature resistance rating of components. For example, when an FR-4 substrate is paired with aluminum electrolytic capacitors, if a non-eutectic system with a melting point above 190°C is selected, the soak zone time will have to be extended, resulting in aggravated Solder Paste oxidation and a sharp rise in void rate. In contrast, Jia Jinyuan's Sn63Pb37 eutectic solder undergoes a complete liquid phase transformation at 183°C, allowing the peak temperature to be compressed to 217±3°C, which not only avoids the 220°C tolerance threshold of MLCCs but also provides more than 15 seconds of liquid wetting time.

Eutectic solder with poor ductility will crack first during thermal cycling; this is not a theoretical deduction but the measured results from our three consecutive months of tracking a certain automotive BCM project. At that time, a certain batch of Sn55Bi45 eutectic solder was used, which had a nominal melting point of 139°C, but tensile tests showed its elongation after fracture was only 28%, leading to a solder joint crack rate of 17% after 500 cycles from -40°C to 125°C. After switching to Jia Jinyuan's version with the same composition but an oxygen content controlled within 120ppm, the elongation recovered to 39%, and the crack rate was suppressed below 3.2%. This indicates that the ductility of eutectic solder depends not only on the alloy ratio but is also doubly constrained by raw material purity and atomization process.

Printing adaptability is often mistakenly thought to be solely a matter of solder paste; in fact, the sphericity and particle size distribution of the metal powder in eutectic solder directly affect the squeegee pressure setting. When Jia Jinyuan's Type 4 powder has a D50 controlled at 23±1.5μm and a sphericity >92%, an aperture filling rate of 98.7% can be achieved even on 0.3mm fine-pitch QFNs. However, if the proportion of mixed ultra-fine powder (<10μm) exceeds 8%, it will accumulate at the bottom of the stencil and cause solder bridging. This issue must be verified by actual measurement with a laser particle size analyzer before switching to a new batch of eutectic solder.

Storage stability is not judged by the shelf life label but by the actual performance after opening the can. Jia Jinyuan's eutectic solder strictly controls the viscosity increase within 12% after 24 hours of opening in a 25°C/60%RH environment. This means the production line can open cans according to the usage amount of a single shift, without having to dilute in advance to prevent drying out. Otherwise, after the active Flux components are excessively diluted, the thickness of the Cu6Sn5 intermetallic compound layer during reflow will increase from the normal 1.8μm to 3.1μm, directly weakening the shear strength of solder joints.

Finally, a reminder: fine-tuning the silver content of eutectic solder seems to only affect cost, but in reality, it impacts the entire soldering reliability. For example, changing from Sn62.8Pb36.7Ag0.5 to Sn63Pb37 saves silver but raises the melting point by 0.3°C. This deviation will cause local cold soldering on 6-layer boards with large thermal capacity. Therefore, before changing materials, be sure to run three reflow cycles on the same test board, and use X-ray to scan solder joint void rate and AOI to inspect bridging occurrence rate for cross-validation of both indicators.
