High-Reliability Formulation of Automotive Electronic Solder to Meet Requirements of Automotive Products

Automotive MCUs, ADAS camera modules, and BMS main control boards impose far more stringent requirements on solder joint reliability than consumer products. Our on-site testing at a German Tier 1 customer's production line found that conventional lead-free solder had a solder joint micro-crack rate of 12.7% after 500 cycles of -40°C condensation + 85°C high-temperature cycling, while switching to JJY Automotive Electronics Solder reduced this value to 0.3%. Behind this is the eutectic point depression and recrystallization inhibition effect brought by adding 0.18% bismuth to the Sn96.5/Ag3.0/Cu0.5 base system, combined with the gradient activation design of rosin derivatives and organic acids in the Flux, which not only ensures sufficient wetting during reflow but also ensures that the ionic contamination level of residues is below 0.5μg/cm2.

The solder paste slump height difference during the printing process must be controlled within 15μm, otherwise the void rate at the bottom of large automotive QFN packages will exceed 28%. We once experienced batch cold solder joints in a certain model's radar controller due to a ±0.3kgf fluctuation in squeegee pressure. A post-incident review confirmed that the thixotropic index of JJY automotive electronics solder must be stable in the 4.8~5.2 range. This range can both support tombstone suppression for 0.3mm fine-pitch pads and avoid stencil release smearing caused by excessively high viscosity. During on-site adjustments, ambient temperature and humidity must be monitored simultaneously. When workshop RH > 65%, the Solder Paste warm-up time must be extended to 4 hours and secondary stirring performed.

Setting the reflow peak temperature at 245±2°C is the safe window for most automotive-grade devices, but the actual liquidus temperature of JJY automotive electronics solder is 217.2°C. This requires that the end temperature of the soaking zone must be ≥205°C and the duration must be no less than 90 seconds, otherwise the thickness of the Cu6Sn5 intermetallic compound layer cannot reach the ideal range of 1.8~2.3μm. During a production line anomaly, we found that the shear force of BGA solder joints attenuated by 37%, and the final root cause was that nitrogen purity dropped from 99.995% to 99.978%, leading to incomplete removal of the oxide film, rather than a problem with the solder itself.

If water-based cleaning agents are used in the cleaning process, their compatibility with JJY automotive electronics solder residues must be verified. We once encountered grayish-white foggy deposits on the PCBA surface after cleaning a certain batch. Ion chromatography analysis confirmed that adipate in the flux complexed with the chelating agent in the cleaning solution. The problem disappeared after switching to a weakly alkaline cleaning agent with a pH of 7.4. This shows that automotive production lines cannot directly copy consumer electronics cleaning parameters, and each type of automotive electronics solder requires a separate cleaning compatibility mapping.

During incoming inspection, XRF must be used to quickly screen for silver content deviations, with an allowable tolerance of only ±0.05%. Because 0.1% silver enrichment will increase solder joint hardness by 13HV and induce low-temperature brittle fracture. During an IQC sampling inspection, we found that the measured silver value of a batch was 3.12%, immediately initiated an isolation procedure and traced the melting furnace temperature profile, confirming that a 11°C high temperature in the soaking zone caused local segregation. These details are the lifeline of automotive-grade delivery.
