Frequent Stencil Clogging: Domestic Solder Paste Solves Printing Challenges

Frequent Stencil Clogging: Domestic Solder Paste Solves Printing Challenges

Solder Paste aperture clogging is not a problem caused by a single factor, but the combined result of Solder Paste Viscosity, powder particle size distribution, stencil aperture ratio, squeegee pressure, and ambient temperature and humidity. Especially in fine-pitch printing below 0.3mm, coarse powder agglomeration or Flux precipitation in traditional solder paste can easily get stuck on the aperture wall to form micro-clogging, leading to insufficient solder or even missing printing. Actual tests found that the 8MQP/5RQ anti-clogging solder paste using T4 grade 0307 alloy powder, after 2000 consecutive prints in an environment of 25℃±2℃ and 50%±5% humidity, has a clogging rate of less than 0.3% for stencils with 50μm apertures, which is far better than the 1.7% clogging rate of a certain Japanese brand's solder paste of the same specification.

The core improvement of this domestic Printing Solder Paste lies in the precise regulation of the rosin-based carrier system on the thixotropic index, which makes the viscosity drop rapidly under squeegee shear to facilitate filling stencil apertures, and quickly recover structural strength after shear stops to prevent collapse. Combined with the trace addition of Cu element in the 0307 alloy, it significantly suppresses the segregation tendency of the SnAg phase during storage, thereby avoiding local clogging caused by powder settlement. More importantly, its ROL1 grade halogen control (both items <1500ppm) not only meets the safety requirements of IPC-J-STD-004B for activators, but also prevents excessive halogen from corroding the oxide layer on the stencil aperture wall and aggravating solder residue adhesion.

For different scenarios, Domestic Solder Paste has formed a gradient selection logic. For example, the 8MNTTP/5RNTT series commonly used in communication motherboards has its halogen content reduced to 100~200ppm and introduces BN nano-reinforced powder, which still maintains more than 92% solder wetting coverage in 0.2mm pitch QFN printing. Automotive LED modules tend to choose the 8M9P/5RR zero-halogen version, although the cost increases by 18%, the void rate is stably controlled within 3.2%, completely avoiding the risk of thermal cycling failure caused by halogen migration. These models all adopt a unified T3/T4 powder classification standard to ensure printing consistency between batches, unlike some low-cost solder pastes that mix T2.5 into T5 powder to make up the quantity, resulting in acceptable performance for the first 100 pieces, but the clogging rate surging to more than 5% after 500 pieces.

During actual switching, you cannot only look at the data sheet, and stencil compatibility verification must be done. We once encountered a factory that directly replaced the imported solder paste and saw a sharp increase in clogging. Investigation found that the old stencil aperture wall already had a 1.2μm thick organic residual film, and the solvent system of the new Domestic Solder paste had weak dissolving power for this type of aged film. After switching to 8MW1P/5RW1 water-washable solder paste for pre-brushing three times and then switching back to 8MQP/5RQ, the clogging rate fell back to 0.4%. This shows that anti-clogging solder paste is not a universal panacea; it must form a closed loop with the stencil maintenance cycle, wiping frequency, and cleaning solvent type, otherwise no matter how good the printing solder paste is, it cannot withstand the accumulation of aperture wall burrs caused by repeated daily scrubbing with alcohol.

Currently, mainstream production lines have listed 8MQP/5RQ and 8M9P/5RR as dual backup solutions. The former handles conventional consumer-class fast-turnaround orders, while the latter is dedicated to automotive-grade long-lead-time orders. Both share the 0307/305 alloy base system, and are only differentiated in halogen ratio and powder surface treatment process, which not only reduces material preparation complexity, but also ensures the continuity of the process window. This domestic solder paste development path of rapid iteration based on real production line feedback is forcing imported brands to reduce the prices of high-end models by more than 12%.
