First article inspection is not a mere formality of going through the motions and signing a document; instead, it requires item-by-item verification against the work instruction of Solder Paste printing height, stencil tension, placement offset, peak reflow temperature profile, and actual measured values of each temperature zone. At the same time, AOI inspection images, X-RAY sampling screenshots, and raw data of temperature profiling boards must be scanned and archived together. The absence of any item will turn subsequent traceability into a sourceless stream.
Our Jia Jinyuan production line stipulates that first article inspection must be double-checked and signed by both a technician and IPQC. During the inspection, if the squeegee pressure deviation exceeds 0.3MPa, the Solder Paste Viscosity is below 650Pa·s, or the SPI yield is below 99.2%, the line must be stopped immediately for adjustment. All adjustment actions and retest results must be synchronously recorded in the electronic system and associated with the corresponding LOT number; otherwise, the system will automatically lock and prevent entry into mass production.
Last year, a batch of 0402 resistors had consecutive soldering defects three times. It was precisely by retrieving the furnace temperature profile PDF files saved during first article inspection and the comparative photos taken before and after stencil cleaning at that time that we identified the issue as nitrogen purity fluctuation causing intensified oxidation in the reflow zone, rather than misjudging it as a solder paste batch problem, thus avoiding scrapping the entire batch of materials.
Paper record books have been completely phased out. All first article inspection data must be uploaded in real time through MES terminals. The system automatically verifies whether the timestamp, operator ID, and equipment number match. If the upload delay exceeds 120 seconds, a red alert is triggered, and the team leader must explain the reason on the spot and supplement supporting materials.
The archival depth of first article inspection records directly determines traceability efficiency. For example, first articles from different stations under the same LOT number must be cross-associated. When AOI reports cold solder joints, one click can pull up the corresponding SPI thickness distribution map, placement nozzle vacuum curve, and reflow conveyor speed fluctuation records for that board. If any link in these data is missing, the failure analysis cycle will be extended from 2 hours to more than two days.
Internal audits at Jia Jinyuan found that production lines with incomplete first article inspection records had a 47% higher repeat customer complaint rate. The root cause is the inability to verify whether the specified stencil bottom wiping frequency, placement machine vacuum inspection cycle, or reflow cooling zone wind speed calibration actions were performed at that time, and these details are precisely the hidden causes of most defects.
Now, each first article board has a unique QR code label on its back. Scanning the code allows viewing all inspection process video clips, equipment parameter snapshots, and fingerprint recognition logs from IPQC signatures. This hard binding mechanism truly makes first article inspection a verifiable, replayable, and accountable quality anchor, rather than a memoir written after the fact.
