The unit purchase price of Solder Paste is not a fixed value but a dynamic range, which depends on metal content (e.g., SAC305 standard contains 3% silver), viscosity grade (#3 to #5), packaging form (can / syringe / dedicated for stencil printing), and whether nitrogen protection is included. The quotation for the same model can vary by 15% to 30% across different suppliers, and the minimum order quantity is usually measured in kilograms. The minimum order for conventional Domestic Solder Paste is 1 kg, while imported brands such as Koki and Senju generally require a starting order of 5 kg. If customers purchase matching Flux or cleaning agents at the same time, some manufacturers will lower the minimum order threshold for solder paste to 2 kg to facilitate bundled orders.
Solder paste sample applications must be accompanied by a clear production line verification purpose, such as for new stencil aperture testing, reflow oven temperature zone adaptation, or low-temperature soldering process replacement verification. Applications cannot be submitted solely on the grounds of "evaluation". We have encountered three cases where applications were repeatedly returned because they did not specify that the solder paste samples would be used for printing 0.3mm pitch QFN devices. Such fine-pitch applications are extremely sensitive to thixotropy and slump rate, so the solder paste sample batch number and original test report number must be provided in advance for traceability.
The conventional solder paste procurement cycle is subject to three key nodes. First, the supplier's raw material stock status: high-purity silver powder and special rosin resin often have a 2 to 4 day allocation delay. Second, the filling production line scheduling: especially at the end of the quarter or before the Spring Festival, when production capacity is tight, the filling queue time may be extended to more than 72 hours. Third, the logistics link: customers in East China usually receive goods by land transport within 2 days, but shipments to Southwest or Northeast China require a 3 to 5 day buffer. Therefore, the actual time span from order placement to delivery is between 5 and 12 working days. Although urgent orders can be compressed to 3 days, the premise is to confirm that the factory warehouse has corresponding batch stock and completes outbound scanning on the same day; otherwise, the so-called urgency merely shifts the waiting time from the procurement side to the logistics side.
When purchasing solder paste, be sure to check whether the version numbers of the MSDS and TDS documents are consistent with the physical label. Last year, a customer received a batch of solder paste labeled T-6 viscosity but actually measured T-5, because the supplier used the wrong old version label paper, and this batch had already been used for two boxes on the production line, ultimately requiring the entire batch to be reworked and reprinted. Therefore, the acceptance process must include on-can opening sampling to measure viscosity and compare it with the factory report, rather than only checking the outer packaging information. This iron rule also applies to solder paste samples; even if only 100 grams are applied for, a squeegee ductility test and microscopic observation of particle distribution must be performed on the spot.
The minimum packaging unit of different solder paste models directly affects the procurement cost structure. For example, the standard can of a certain Japanese brand is 500 grams, but the syringe package with the same formula starts at 30 grams. On the surface, the unit price of the syringe is doubled, but in reality, it saves the management costs of nitrogen protection and refrigerated storage after can opening. For small-batch trial production customers with a monthly usage of less than 2 kg, choosing small packages for solder paste procurement instead reduces the comprehensive loss rate. We have promoted this switch at an automotive electronics factory in Dongguan, reducing the waste rate of solder paste after opening from 18% to within 5%.
